We said good-bye to Emmaleigh for the next four months as she studies abroad in Spain. She is staying with a family near Madrid. She has been lost on the bus, it snowed when it almost never does, and her bed is a trundle, that when pulled out, takes up all the floor space of the room. Comedic errors aside, I think she is going to love it. We finally got an e-mail and she writes:
The town, Alcalá, is a suburb of Madrid, about a 30 minute train ride to the northeast. Parts of it are very old and quaint while other parts are more urbanized (mostly the outskirts, where we live). There’s actually quite a bit of history here. Cervantes, the writer of Don Quixote, was born here, and his house is now a museum which I pass on my way to school. Isabel and Ferdinand also met Christopher Columbus here for the first time, and Juana la Loca gave birth here to Charles V, the future Holy Roman Emperor. We learned all this from a professor from the University of Alcalá who showed us around the first day.
This week Tanner's middle school soccer team played a game that determined whether or not they would advance to the district playoffs. Independence Middle School beat Duncan Middle School 3-1. Tanner plays striker and scored one of the goals. They are now in playoff position and will face another opponent in their first match early this week.
Chloe also scored big this week. Her documentary on Nelson Mandela won a place in district competition for National History Day. Her DVD will be judged at the district level for state advancement. Bravo!
I love the updates and really love the quotes. - Especially the one by that President guy.... don't you know him somehow? ;-)
